A genetic disorder causing a lack of melanin, which reveals itself in a lack of coloring of the fur and eyes and can lead to long term health conditions including internal organ failure.

American PitBull Terrier
( APBT )

A breed of dog that was formally recognized in 1898.

American Staffordshire Terrier
( AST )

The AKC version of the American PitBull Terrier, which is in fact still 100% pure bred PitBull.

Kennel certification that is provided free to APBR breeding members that comes with many additional services geared to help support responsible breeding, ethical practices, and honest business practice.

Bear Baiting

A sport of old that used dogs of various breeds in hunting that contested them against bears.

Black

A genetic trait causing a black fur color.

Black and Tan

A genetic trait that causes a primary black coloring with tanning at the points.

Bloodline

A term used to describe the lineage of an animal developed by a breeder.

Blue

The black genetic trait that is acted on by a dilution gene leading to a gray coloration in the fur.

Breed Specific Legislation
( BSL )

Unconstitutional laws set up to either ban ownership of a breed or place unfair or unrealistic expectations on its owners such as requirement of insurance that is not available or financially unfeasible to buy.

Brindle

A genetic trait that reveals itself in a stripe pattern in the fur.

Brucellosis

A contagious bacterial disease that may be passed to humans but is extremely harmful to dogs. This disease although rare is often acquired through contact with stray and roaming animals.

Buckskin

A genetic trait causing a brown coloration of fur similar to the coloration of a deer.

Bull Baiting

A sport of old that used dogs of various breeds contesting them against bulls originally thought to tenderize their meat before slaughter.

Chocolate

A genetic trait that reveals itself a dark reddish color.

Coccidia

A microscopic organism that affects the digestive tract and can cause dehydration and even death. There are no drugs that can effectively treat this disease. Supportive therapy is the only thing that can be done while the dogs immune system builds up and fights the infection off.

Distemper

A highly contagious disease that causes death in the majority of those who contract it. There is no cure and only supportive therapy can be provided. Euthanasia is often recommended by professionals due to the severe neurological disorders that often plague those who survive.

Euthanasia

When a shelter or pound kills an animal often to make room or as a result of bad policy.

Family

A group of Pits designated by relationship, mating and ownership.

Family Profile

A special profile developed by the APBR that uses the most advanced tracking system in the entire registration industry to link those in a Family.

Fawn

A genetic trait causing a light blonde brown coloring of the fur.

Foster Care

The act of taking in a pet for a period of time until an adoptive home can be found.

Genealogy

The description of individuals in a Family and how they relate to each other.

A proprietary genealogy tracking system of the APBR provided to APBR Members that allows them to keep track of their Pit's Family relations.

Genetic Testing

A test done on the genetic makeup of an animal to determine parentage, sex and various genetic based illness.

Heartworm

A parasitic worm passed on as larvae through mosquito bites that group in the heart and can lead to heart failure if untreated.

Hip Dysplasia

An often preventable genetic illness that is typically caused by inbreeding and linebreeding.

Hookworm

A hook-shaped worm that is contracted by ingestion or by the worm burrowing into the skin that lives in the digestive tract.

Inbreeding

The act of breeding related animals that often leads to serious medical issues in the brain, organs and skeletal parts of the body as well as a suppressed immune system and significant decrease in fertility.

Leucistic

The genetic trait that causes an animal to look much like an albino but with coloration of the eyes and nose.

Linebreeding

A term used by breeders who practice inbreeding that is intended to soften the sound and perception of the inbreeding process.

Mange

A mite that affects an animal with a suppressed immune system (often linked to inbreeding) that is often passed on from its parent(s).

A genetic trait that results in blue eye(s) and / or darker patches of a color on lighter areas of the same color.

The first and only study of the Merle genetic trait on the PitBull breed exclusively conducted by the American PitBull Registry.

Moo-Moo Pattern

A patching design in the fur on top of a white primary coat color. The official term of which is piebald.

Neglect

The act of not caring for an animal’s needs which may or may not be intentional.

No-Kill Shelter

An animal shelter that does not make practice of euthanizing an animal unless absolutely necessary.

Old Family Red Nose

A strain of Pits that was given its name based on the appearance of its red nose that although is now very common once almost became extinct before it gained in popularity.

The generic term for the registration process of an animal.

Parvo

A disease typically caught before a pups immune system is able to fight it off during the first 10 weeks of life that causes severe dehydration and is often deadly. Supportive therapy includes keeping a pup hydrated until the pup recovers. Immunization and isolation during immune system development is the best preventative measure.

Pedigree

Documentation of an animal's heritage.

Piebald

A patching design in the fur typically on top of a white primary coat color.

PitBull Advocacy

The act of advocating on behalf of the PitBull.

PitBull Friendly Organization

An organization that is friendly to the PitBull breed.

Rabies

A terminal illness that results in brain damage of an infected animal, which is contracted through a bite, that makes an animal mentally unstable and especially dangerous.

Ratting

A sport developed in the 1800's that placed a dog in a match against rats to determine how many rats could be killed in an allotted time.

Red

A genetic trait that results in a red coloration of the fur.

Red Nose

A genetic trait that results in a red coloration of the nose.

Registration

The act of placing a pure bred animal in a tracking system used to track heritage and breeding.

Rescue

An organization that typically follows a no-kill philosophy and often specializes in specific breeds.

Responsible Ownership

An owner that takes care of their pet in a responsible manner and is considerate of their community by properly confining and socializing it in order to reduce potential danger and indiscriminate breeding.

Roundworm

A parasitic worm that is contagious to humans (especially children) that primarily lives in the small intestines of pups under 12 weeks of age. If contracted by humans the result can potentially lead to blindness if the parasite makes its way to the optic nerve.

Service and Therapy Work

Work by animals that is beneficial to humans such as medical visitation, medical aide, rescue, police work, etc.

Super Pedigree

The world's largest printed pedigree of any registry ranging from 8-11 generations. At 11 generations it is over 8 times larger than the largest pedigree offered by the UKC or ADBA. This pedigree is offered exclusively through the American PitBull Registry ( APBR ).

Tapeworm

A worm that lives in the gut that can be contracted from fleas, contaminated droppings and infected food products.

Ticing

The genetic trait that leads to the appearance of many small spots on the skin most often visible through white fur. This trait is also often present in white Merle PitBulls.

Tick Borne Illness

Illness such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever that is transmitted through an infected tick's bite.

Tiger Stripe

The generic term for the brindle coloration.

Tri-Color

The genetic trait that leads to three distinct colors in the fur.

Vaccinations

Shots given to a animal to prevent it from contracting various illnesses.

Whipworm

A parasitic worm that lives at the front of the large intestine that looks much like a whip and is typically contracted by an animal cleaning itself of infected dirt and droppings.

White

The genetic trait that causes the fur to be white.

Any animal that's primary purpose in development was to aid in the work of man.
